Across the waters to Bruny Island, Tasmania

With only half a day left in Tasmania, we were determined to make the most of it.

We drove about forty-minutes south from Hobart to the ferry terminal at Kettering. It was my first time driving a car onto a ferry which was exciting! We made our way across the waters to Bruny Island and in 20 minutes we were there.

The Neck Lookout, Bruny Island

A lot of people have said that Bruny Island is one of the must-visit places when you visit Tasmania. With only half a day left, we couldn’t explore the whole island so we just visited the north part and made a stop at The Neck Lookout. You can probably gather why it’s called ‘The Neck’ when you look at the photos. This thin strip is what connects the north and south of Bruny Island. Apparently, you can spot penguins here but they come out later at night so we missed out.

Get Shucked, Bruny Island

Before making our way back to Hobart, we stopped by the best-rated food places on Bruny Island called Get Shucked – an oyster bar. They sell fresh oysters sustainably cultivated from Great Bay on Bruny Island. I’m not a massive oyster fan but I do like them occasionally. We read many reviews saying that the oysters from Get Shucked were the best ones they’ve ever had in their life… so of course we had to try them.

We got a dozen oysters: 4 Natural, 4 Kilpatrick and 4 Asian Fusion. I’ve had natural oysters before and… well, let’s just say I prefer them cooked. However, I didn’t mind these ones! They still taste like ocean-poop and have that slimy texture, but I found them to be very tolerable. I personally preferred the Kilpatrick – these have always been my favourite way of eating oysters.

Honey Badger Café, Hobart

Before making our way to the airport, we stopped by Salamanca Square in Hobart one last time to have a nibble. We ended up at Honey Badger Dessert Café where it turns out Honey Badger does give a shit because the desserts were pretty good.

After walking around Salamanca Square a little longer, freaking out because I couldn’t find the car keys and remembering I left them at Honey Badger, Mattias and I went off to the airport. We said goodbye to our little Kia Rio rental and that was the end of our Tasmania adventures.

Sad. I wish I was still there. Still, at least the trip validated that travel and nature makes me happy. Not all is lost.
